A Virtual by Ozbuckeye

Banksy

Banksy is the world's most infamous street artist. Acting in anonymity since the 90's, he is known for his stencilling technique which he first used to minimise time on scene. Banksy uses his platform for political and social commentary, often addressing topics of war, commentary and greed. Originating in his home city Bristol, UK, he has now used the world as his canvas. His ability to convey powerful messages through visually simple yet impactful artwork has earned him a place among the most influential contemporary artists.

Despite his international fame, Banksy maintains an anonymous identity, which has led to widespread speculation and interest in who the artist might be. This mystery surrounding his identity has become a defining aspect of his persona and adds a layer of intrigue to his work.

Banksy's most expensive work was Love is in the Bin, which originally sold for £1.1 million GBP at auction, and was famously shredded when the gavel fell. The work was housed in a deep frame and was plugged in to facilitate built-in electrical lights which also powered a shredding device hidden in the bottom edge. The only artwork ever to be created at auction, Love is in the Bin set a world record for the most expensive Banksy painting sold at auction when it achieved £18.6 million GBP.

Graffiti Tunnel - USYD

The Graffiti Tunnel at the University of Sydney is a legal place to spray paint, write slogans and create street art.  The tunnel connects Science Road to Manning Road and has long been a place where students were free to adorn the wall with chalked or painted messages, both political and social. Rumour has it that the University designated the area after being fed up with students protesting against the Vietnam War by vandalising the sandstone walls of the Quadrangle Building.

Anyone can add their message to the walls, as long as they follow the rules of when and where they can paint.

Logging Requirements

In order to claim this virtual cache, you must check out the street art @ USYD Graffiti Tunnel (GZ). The original logging task was for you to get your hands dirty and create street art using spray cans, however this is no longer allowed to be required under the new virtual guidelines.

Required:

  • Take a photo at GZ of your favourite street art with something identifiable to you, such as your GPSr or username.

Optional but highly encouraged:

  • Tag your Geocaching name, draw something that represents your name, or even create an original piece, signing off with your GC name.
  • Upload a photo of the work you create, and it must be clearly identifiable to your Geocaching name.

The best five artworks will be featured in Banksy's Hall of Fame

IMPORTANT - Graffiti Rules:

  • You can only graffiti in the tunnels outside of 7am-7pm weekdays, and usually anytime on weekends if there are no classes in the tunnel.
  • You must not graffiti the doors, door handles, lights or exit signs.
  • You must not graffiti anywhere else other than in the tunnel.
  • As a courtesy to other artists, although artworks in this tunnel come and go regularly, try not to tag over large pieces.
