On Sunday 15th February 2009, an iron statue of a nude man was lifted onto the roof of Blackwells Art and Poster shop, on the corner of Broad St. and Turl St.
At 7' tall and weighing half a tonne, this is Antony Gormleys addition to the Oxford skyline.
Commisioned by Exeter College, the £250,000 cost was provided by an anonymous benefactor.
It's one of a series of Gormley sculptures entitled "Another Time 2"
The figure is based on the actual body of the sculptor.
Sir Antony Gormley is a British sculptor, born in 1950. He is probably best known for his sculptures entitled " The Angel of the North" near Gateshead and "Another Place" -which consists of 100 cast iron figures facing into the sea- at Crosby beach near Liverpool.
Oxford is lucky enough to have another Gormley sculpture entitled "Present Time 2001" which can be seen in the quadrangle of Mansfield college.
