Geocache Description:

Clarissa Harlowe Barton, known as Clara, is one of the most honored women in American history. Guided by an intense devotion to helping others, she forged a bold path of service to help those in need. As founder of the American Red Cross, Clara is considered a visionary whose humanitarian spirit helped change the world. The posted coordinates will take you to a mural in Dansville, NY celebrating the life of Clara Barton. I have included parking coordinates that are a short walk away, located near the Clara Barton Chapter #1 American Red Cross. Here is a link with more information on this museum, including a virtual tour. In-person tours are available by appointment. https://www.redcross.org/local/new-york/western-new-york/about-us/locations/clara-barton-1.html

To log this virtual, you will need to visit two locations, the Clara Barton mural and the Clara Barton statue (see waypoints). On-street parking is located near the statue.

Clara Barton became a teacher and founded the first free school in New Jersey. Clara was an independent nurse during the American Civil War. Her nickname was "Angel of the Battlefield" for her work helping injured soldiers. When the war ended, she founded the Office of Missing Soldiers, and helped to reunite over 20,000 soldiers with their families.

Clara founded the first American Chapter of the Red Cross, which is located in Dansville, NY, on May 21, 1881. Clara was 60 years old when she founded the Chapter, and served as the President of the American Chapter for 23 years. This location is now a museum, which you can tour virtually or in-person via appt. Requirements for logging:

Location One (Mural): 1. Take a photo of yourself or a personal item with part of the mural in the background- does not have to include your face- a thumbs-up is fine.

Location Two (Statue): Question 1: What shape surrounds the base of the statue?
Question 2: Find the plaque on the BACK of the statue. Where were the bricks sourced from? Note: This plaque has been changed since I first visited, and the question has been updated as of 4/19/25.

Logs will be deleted if answers are not sent within 3 days (to prevent armchair logging of this virtual).
