Piazza Duomo with its churches and palaces is the Baroque jewel of Siracusa. The rectangular-shaped square is located in the historic Ortigia island part of the city on the site of the former Greek acropolis. A row of Doric columns can still be seen on the side of the Dome. The most significant elements of the square's current appearance were given by reconstruction after the 1693 earthquake.

The most prominent building of the square is without any doubt is The Cathedral of Syracuse (Duomo di Siracusa, Cattedrale metropolitana della Natività di Maria Santissima). The interior of the church with two aisles is fantastic combination of a rustic walls and Baroque decoration.

The cathedral owns some relics of St. Lucy, the patroness of the city, bone fragments and a few parts of clothes. Twice a year, on the first Sunday in May and on December 13, a statue of Saint Lucy is brought out of the cathedral and it is carrying through the city during great celebrations.

There are also many other historical and religious buildings on the square, such as Palazzo Vermexio, Palazzo Beneventano del Bosco, Biblioteca Alagoniana and the church of Santa Lucia alla Badia.
