circular, otro ovalado) y una maza en la mano derecha, dándoles un aire
perverso, incluso maligno.
«Cuando se cumplan los mil años, Satanás será soltado de su
prisión y saldrá para engañar a las naciones que están sobre los cuatro
puntos
cardinales de la tierra, a Gog y a Magog, a fin de congregarlos para la
batalla. El número de ellos es como la arena del mar»
Apocalipsis 20: 7-8.
En el libro de Ezequiel, en la Biblia,
aparece la referencia a Gog y Magog. El segundo como un país y el
primero como
su gobernante, posiblemente como un conjunto de naciones al norte de
Israel y
que son el preludio de una invasión catastrófica. Por el contrario, en
el
Apocalipsis del Nuevo Testamento se alude a Gog y Magog como naciones “sobre
los cuatro puntos cardinales de la tierra”, engañadas por Satanás y que participarán
en la batalla final.
Gog y Magog,
además de aparecer tanto en textos bíblicos y en el Corán, han
pervivido en el
imaginario cristiano medieval con un papel predominante en el
Apocalipsis.
Cuando el cristianismo se consolidó como religión oficial del imperio
romano,
llevó a su identificación con el enemigo invasor: los bárbaros fuera de
las
fronteras del imperio.
