Zarasai – miestas šiaurės rytų Lietuvoje, Utenos apskrityje, 49 km į šiaurės rytus nuo Utenos.
Liaudies etimologija pasakoja tokią miesto atsiradimo legendą. Kadaise ant didelės kalvos gyvenusi milžinų šeima, kurioje augęs milžinukas Azerasas – linksmas, greitas ir mėgstąs žaisti slėpynių. Tėvai labai mylėję savo sūnų ir dažnai žaisdavę su juo. Viena dieną šeimą išėjusi miškan. Milžinukas taip pasislėpęs, kad tėvai jau nebesugebėję jo rasti. Tėvai šaukę – „Azerasai! Azerasai! Azerasai!“, bet aidas atkartojęs tik „Zarasai! Zarasai! Zarasai!“ Nuo balsų pabudęs milžinukas suskubęs pas tėvus ir visi apsidžiaugę, kad surado vieni kitą. Vėliau ant kalvos apsigyvenę žmonės čia įkūrė miestą ir pavadino milžinų šeimos atminimui Zarasais.
Zarasų miestas išsidėstęs ežerų apsuptoje kalvotoje vietoje, Zarasų aukštumoje (Aukštaičių aukštumos dalis), šiaurinėje rajono dalyje, netoli Latvijos sienos. Miestas apsuptas ežerų – miesto pietvakariuose telkšo Zarasas, pietuose – Zarasaitis, pietryčiuose – Baltas, rytuose – Griežtos ežeras. Zarasaitį su Griežta jungia Laukesos upelis, su Zarasu ir Baltu skiria tiltai. Miesto pietryčiuose – Magučių miškas. Aukščiausia vieta yra rytiniame Zarasaičio ir Balto ežerų krante – Skautų kalnas (170 m virš jūros lygio), ant kurio iki 1944 m. stovėjo aukščiausias Baltijos šalyse šuolių su slidėmis tramplinas.

Zarasai is a town in north-eastern Lithuania, in Utena County, 49 km north-east of Utena.
The folk etymology tells the following legend about the origin of the town. Once upon a time, a family of giants lived on a large hill, where the giant Azeras grew up - cheerful, fast and fond of playing hide and seek. The parents loved their son very much and often played with him. One day the family went out into the woods. The giant had hidden himself so much that the parents could no longer find him. The parents shouted, "Azeri! Azeri! Azerasai!", but the echo echoed only "Zarasai! Zarasai! Zarasai!" The giant, awakened by the voices, rushed to his parents and everyone was happy to have found each other. Later, the people who settled on the hill founded a town and named it Zarasai in memory of the giant family.
Zarasai is situated in a hilly area surrounded by lakes, in the Zarasai Upland (part of the Aukštaičiai Upland), in the northern part of the district, close to the Latvian border. The town is surrounded by lakes - Zarasas in the south-west, Zarasaitis in the south, Baltas in the south-east and Griežtos Lake in the east. Zarasaitis is connected to Griežta by the Laukesa stream, and to Zarasas and Baltas by bridges. In the south-east of the town there is the Magučiai forest. The highest point is Scout Hill (170 m above sea level) on the eastern shore of Lakes Zarasaitis and Baltas, which until 1944 was home to the highest ski jumping hill in the Baltic States.
