Geocache Description:

You are standing on what is called the Spanish Steps, or sometimes called the Spanish Stairs, which were modeled after Rome's Piazza di Spagna (English: Square of Spain) and their set of Spanish Steps.  These steps were built in 1916 to connect a streetcar line on Broadway to Commerce Street. Not only were these steps important for pedestrians but they also served as a fire escape for the surrounding buildings, like the adjacent Elks Temple (also constructed in 1916).

Sadly, the steps fell into disrepair in the 1950s and they continued to degrade until they were first rehabilitated in 2011.  Then the McMenamin brothers stepped in and purchased The Elks Temple.  By this time the property was vacant for over 30 years.  Soon after the Temple and steps received a full restored to return them to their former glory.  This full restoration began in 2017 and was finally completed in 2019.  Inside the Elks Temple you will find the Spanish Bar as well as The Spanish Ball Room which both pay homage to the Spanish Steps.
