Cathédrale Saint Corentin

  C’est en 1239 que l’Evêque Raynaud décide de construire la cathédrale actuelle en s’appuyant sur les fondations d’une ancienne cathédrale romane. En 1410, les voûtes du choeur sont achevées, tandis que sont posées les verrières dans les fenêtres hautes. En 1424, l’Evêque Bertrand de Rosmadec entreprend la construction de la nef et des deux tours de la façade.
A partir des années 1850, l’architecte quimpérois Joseph Bigot entreprend la restauration de l’édifice, principalement le décor des chapelles et la commande de nouveaux vitraux détruits lors de la Révolution Française. Sa réalisation la plus spectaculaire reste l’achèvement des deux tours avec la construction des flèches entre 1854 et 1856, financée par les Quimpérois.
De 1989 à 1999, une campagne de restauration révèle l’aspect de la cathédrale à la fin du 15ème siècle : restitution des polychromies intérieures avec réapparition des nervures traitées en ocre jaune et ocre rouge et chaulage général des parements.

  In 1239, Bishop Raynaud decided to build the present cathedral on the foundations of an old Romanesque cathedral. In 1410, the vaults of the choir were completed, while the glass windows in the upper windows were installed. In 1424, Bishop Bertrand de Rosmadec undertook the construction of the nave and the two towers of the façade.
From the 1850s onwards, the Quimper architect Joseph Bigot undertook the restoration of the building, mainly the decoration of the chapels and the commissioning of new stained glass windows which had been destroyed during the French Revolution. His most spectacular achievement was the completion of the two towers with the construction of the spires between 1854 and 1856, financed by the people of Quimper.
From 1989 to 1999, a restoration campaign revealed the appearance of the cathedral at the end of the 15th century: restitution of the interior polychromy with the reappearance of the ribs treated in yellow and red ochre and general whitewashing of the facings.
