Le Sablier est un monument situé en France à Dunkerque, à l'extrémité nord-ouest du site du Grand large LAAC. Conçu par l'artiste plasticienne Séverine Hubard le monument a été érigé en 2017 à la suite d'un concours destiné à commémorer l'opération dynamo, autre appellation de la bataille de Dunkerque, survenue au début du second conflit mondial. Cette réalisation intervient au moment de la sortie du film Dunkerque qui retrace cet épisode.
L’artiste a choisi le Sablier, symbole de la mesure du temps qui s’écoule par analogie avec l’évacuation par la mer et au compte-goutte des soldats alliés pris dans la poche de Dunkerque. Cette œuvre, à la mémoire du succès de l’Opération Dynamo, est également un hommage aux militaires tués ou portés disparus dans la période du 26 mai au 4 juin 1940. Le Sablier symbolise aussi une possibilité de retournement capable de transformer une défaite en victoire.
Description of the geocache:
The Hourglass is a monument located in Dunkirk, France, at the north-western end of the Grand Large LAAC site. Designed by visual artist Séverine Hubard, the monument was erected in 2017 following a competition to commemorate Operation Dynamo, another name for the Battle of Dunkirk, which occurred at the beginning of the Second World War. This achievement came at the time of the release of the film Dunkirk, which recounts this episode.
The artist chose the Hourglass, a symbol of the measurement of time that passes by analogy with the evacuation by sea and in dribs and drabs of the Allied soldiers caught in the Dunkirk pocket. This work, in memory of the success of Operation Dynamo, is also a tribute to soldiers killed or missing in the period from May 26 to June 4, 1940. The Hourglass also symbolizes a possibility of reversal capable of transforming a defeat into a victory.
