ABDIJ VAN TONGERLO - NORBERTIJNENABDIJ

Op verzoek van heer Giselbert, een vermogend landheer, kwamen omstreeks 1130 enkele norbertijnen van de Sint-Michielsabdij van Antwerpen zich op zijn landgoed in Tongerlo vestigen.
Deze jonge kloosterstichting ontstond in het kader van de kerkelijke vernieuwingsbeweging rond Norbert van Gennep, die in Prémontré (F) rond 1121 met een gemeenschap van reguliere kanunniken was begonnen.
Norbertijnen worden ook wel witheren genoemd naar hun witte habijt. De orde kent ook een derde orde voor leken.
Om haar werkzaam bestaan te verzekeren werden woeste gronden in cultuur gebracht. Voorspoed en rampspoed wisselden elkaar af. Er kwamen tijden van groei en expansie op ‘alle’ terreinen van de toenmalige samenleving. Opvallende krachtlijnen waren de diensten van pastoraal in veertig kerken en de diensten van gebed met een vaste kern van koorheren. Naast een actieve armenzorg ontplooide zich een uitgebreid mecenaat op vele fronten van kunst, cultuur en wetenschap.
Op 6 december 1796 moest de gemeenschap van Tongerlo noodgedwongen in ballingschap gaan. Ten gevolge van de Franse Revolutie werd de abdij opgeheven en haar bezit verkocht. Deze uittocht dwong Tongerlo klein te leren leven in jaren van beproeving.
Erg gehavend, met slechts zes overlevenden van de honderdzesentwintig, kon Tongerlo in 1837-1840 het gemeenschappelijk leven hernemen in het kasteel van Broechem. Moedig zocht men met oude waarden naar nieuwe wegen.
Op 1 juli 1840 kwam een kleine groep terug naar Tongerlo. Er volgden jaren van snelle groei en vitaliteit. Later deze eeuw ontvouwde zich een intense missionaire activiteit, eerst in Groot-Britannië (1872), vervolgens in Congo (1892) en ook in Chili (1965). In eigen land werd de vitaliteit van de abdijgemeenschap gemarkeerd door Oostpriesterhulp, het Sportapostolaat, het Liturgisch Apostolaat en de aanwezigheid in vele parochies.
Veranderende kerkelijke en maatschappelijke omstandigheden, die zichtbaar en voelbaar werden sinds Vaticanum II, leren ons nieuw te leven met de vreugde van het Evangelie, in trouw aan het vieren van de liturgie en in vele vormen van gastvrijheid, verkondiging, onthaal en beschikbaarheid.
Je opdrachten om deze virtual cache te loggen:
1) Zoek bij het poortgebouw naar het gelijknamige plaatje dat is aangebracht tegen de muur en maak de som van alle getallen dat je op hierop kan vinden. Dit is AB.
2) Stuur vervolgens een blanco mail naar virtualRubRikAB@gmail.com met als onderwerp je cache naam. AB vervang je dus door het juiste getal. Als het goed is krijg je normaal gezien per kerende meteen een automatische mail terug met toestemming tot loggen.
3) Wandel verder naar het binnenplein en maak op bovenstaande coördinaten een leuke foto van jezelf, je GPS, een teamgenoot, je persoonlijke mascotte, ... met op de achtergrond het abtshuis samen met het wapenschild gemaakt door abt J. Vander Achter net boven de ingang als bewijs dat je ter plaatse was en voeg deze bij je log. Uiteraard moet je zelf niet herkenbaar in beeld.
4) Optioneel maar uiteraard niet verplicht: kruip in de huid van deze 'witheren' en ga (deels) in het wit gekleed op de foto.

At the request of Lord Giselbert, a wealthy landlord, some Premonstratensians from St. Michael's Abbey of Antwerp came to settle on his estate in Tongerlo around 1130.
This young monastery foundation arose in the context of the ecclesiastical renewal movement around Norbert van Gennep, who had started a community of canons regular in Prémontré (F) around 1121.
Premonstratensians are also called whitemen after their white habit. The order also has a third order for lay people.
To ensure its active existence, wastelands were brought under cultivation. Prosperity and disaster alternated. Times of growth and expansion came in 'all' areas of society at that time. Striking highlights were the pastoral services in forty churches and the prayer services with a permanent core of choir members. In addition to active care for the poor, extensive patronage developed on many fronts of art, culture and science.
On December 6, 1796, the community of Tongerlo was forced to go into exile. As a result of the French Revolution, the abbey was closed and its property sold. This exodus forced Tongerlo to learn to live small during years of trial.
Badly damaged, with only six survivors out of one hundred and twenty-six, Tongerlo was able to resume communal life in Broechem castle in 1837-1840. People courageously looked for new ways with old values.
On July 1, 1840, a small group returned to Tongerlo. Years of rapid growth and vitality followed. Later this century, intense missionary activity unfolded, first in Great Britain (1872), then in Congo (1892) and also in Chile (1965). Domestically, the vitality of the abbey community was marked by Eastern Priestly Aid, the Sports Apostolate, the Liturgical Apostolate and the presence in many parishes.
Changing ecclesiastical and social circumstances, which became visible and tangible since Vatican II, teach us to live anew with the joy of the Gospel, in fidelity to the celebration of the liturgy and in many forms of hospitality, proclamation, welcome and availability.
Your assignments to log this virtual cache:
1) Look at the gatehouse for the eponymous plate that is mounted on the wall and sum all the numbers you can find on it. This is AB.
2) Then send a blank email to virtualRubRikAB@gmail.com with your geocache username as the subject. So you replace AB with the correct number. If all goes well, you will normally immediately receive an automatic email with permission to log.
3) Walk further towards the courtyard and take a nice photo at the posted coordinates of yourself, your GPS, a teammate, your personal mascot, ... with the abbot's house in the background together with the coat of arms made by Abbot J. Vander Achter just above the entrance as proof that you were on site and attach it to your log. Of course, you don't have to be recognizable in the picture.
4) Optional but of course not mandatory: put yourself in the shoes of these 'white people' and have your photo taken (partly) dressed in white.
