Geocache Description:

🇸🇮

🇬🇧

Janez Boljka was born in 1931 in Subotica and moved with his parents to Ljubljana after the Second World War. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana in 1956. Three years later, he completed a postgraduate specialisation in sculpture under Professor Karel Putrih, and in 1961 a specialisation in printmaking under Professor Rik Debenjak.
The founder of surrealist sculpture in Slovenia, he created his early works in iron and later cast them in bronze. His sculpture adorns several cities, among the most famous of which are perhaps the bronze buffalo at the entrance to the Ljubljana Zoo and the monument to the victims of the National Liberation at Žale, and the bust of Jakopič and reliefs of Alojz Gradnik, Jožef Petkovšek and Ivan Cankar.
The characteristic two-layeredness of the whole and the assembly of individual components (often already used objects) can also be recognised in decorative sculptures such as the Ribnican in front of the former Smelt building, the Atomic Venus in the courtyard of the same palace, the dragon of the fountain on Trubarjeva Street, the fish on the fountain in Nazorjeva Street and the monument in Latterman's Alley in Tivoli. The Pope also has his bronze statue of Pieta in his collection, which was presented to John Paul II by the Archdiocese of Ljubljana.
The motifs developed by Janez Boljka were seated figures (a larger series of these were created mainly in small sculpture), but he also designed standing figures, especially series of painters. Later, he became interested in the animal world, including the buffalo in front of the zoo.He also worked in printmaking, depicting related motifs in a series of silkscreen prints to his sculpture.
