Geocache Description:

EST:

ENG:

Every city with a history has its own stories and legends, and so does Tallinn. Several fascinating legends have been preserved about various places in the Old Town. Some of them are better known, some less known.

As always with legends, believe it or not, they are still intresting ;)

This virtual cache marks a legend that is perhaps not as well known as some other stories of the old town, and many people have not even noticed the sculpture on the roof while walking by.

Legend of the old town pervert

In the house on the roof of which the old man is sitting, a merchant lived with his beautiful young wife. One evening, while undressing, a young woman noticed an older man at the window of the opposite house, staring at her through the window. On the following evenings the old man was also present and peered through his glasses into the woman's window. Finally, the woman complained to her husband about the pervert neighbour. The husband did not want to solve the situation with violence, instead he hired a sculptor, who had to make a statue of the old man with his opera glasses, which he installed on the roof of his house. When the old man now went to look through his window again to peek at his neighbor's wife, he found a copy of himself staring back to him in the opposite house.
The statue of the old man is still on the roof today, as a reminder of the old man's inability to control his curiosity.

True or not?
Believe it or not.

The well-known Estonian art historian Jüri Kuuskemaa has commented that the bust of the old man, which decorates the building built by Jacques Rosenbaum in the last century, simply symbolizes human curiosity.
