The CHUM (Montreal University Hospital Center) has a total of 14 artworks that can be admired in various locations in the pavilions and outside the establishment.
You are in front of one of the public artworks composed by Ibghy & Lemmens whose title a priori expresses a mathematical absurdity.
The sculptural installation, composed of several elements, extends over 46 meters and nearly 400 years of history. Each of the sculptures that form the artwork is composed of repeated geometric units, which constitute a numbering system intended to represent a moment in the life of four hospital in the metropolis (1+1+1=1). This process of concretizing data, where numbers dictate the shape of the sculptures, reflects the prevalence of statistics, numeration and accounting as the privileged forms of knowledge of our time.
This work also highlights the transformations in medical practices and technologies over time, gives visibility to acts of care and love, such as the number of visitors who stayed with a patient each night in February 2020.
