Tribune Bay Beach
Tribune Bay Beach or Big Trib as the locals call it, is located on Hornby Island, and is a perfect beach spot in the summer. Although it is far to get to, it is away from the bustling city and offers shallow waters and soft white sand.
The Beach's White Sand
The white sand on Tribune Bay Beach on Hornby Island is a result of natural processes involving both erosion and mineral composition. The sand’s pristine whiteness comes from the high concentration of finely ground quartz, which is common in the region’s rock formations. Over time, weathering and wave action have gradually broken down the surrounding granite and other parent rocks, eroding them into tiny, smooth quartz grains. The smooth, white grains are further refined by the constant motion of water, which sorts and polishes the sand. The relatively low presence of darker minerals in the area means the sand remains exceptionally light in color, creating the beach's striking, almost tropical appearance.
