This memorial is for those who died in Colorado on October 2 1970.
On Friday October 2 1970, the Wichita State Shockers football team, coaches, staff and booster members boarded 2 planes for a trip to play Utah State in a game the next day. Both planes took off from Wichita and headed to Denver to refuel. They nicknamed the planes the "Gold and Black" planes since that is their school colors. Upon refueling, the Black plane continued on the preplanned route heading to Logan, Utah. The "Gold" pilots decided to take a more scenic route over the Rockies. The overloaded plane was unable to climb above the mountain ridges and became trapped in a box canyon. Thus, crashing into the side of the mountains, killing 29 of the 40 on board, 2 died later from their injuries. Only 8 players and the co pilot survived the crash.
I was lucky enough to have one of those survivors as my Industrial Arts teacher in school. Someone that I was blessed to know and will never forget.
