Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Wellington edition of Virtual Scrabble®

To play this game of Scrabble, choose a word using the rules below and then visit enough of the waypoints to spell your word. Each waypoint has been randomly assigned a letter of the alphabet. There are 100 waypoints to choose from, each representing one of the 100 tiles in a Scrabble game. You only need to visit the waypoints assigned to the letters of your word.

All of the waypoints are at train and cable car stops around the greater Wellington region.

Be sure to read the rules first.

Rules

  • Your chosen word must be:
    • An acceptable English Scrabble word of between five and fifteen letters
      (see note: 1).
    or
  • Each chosen word must be unique, and can only be used one time. Make sure you check the list of accepted words used so far (at the bottom of the Geocache Description) to ensure your chosen word has not yet been used (see note: 4).
  • Each waypoint has an item described that you must take a photo of. The item must be clearly visible in your photo.
  • Your photos must all also include your Geocaching name. A picture of yourself is not required, or acceptable, without your Geocaching name being included
    (see note: 5).
  • Both the item described and your Geocaching name must be clearly visible and readable in all the photos (see note: 6).
  • There are two waypoints assigned to 'blank'. These can be used to represent any letter you want (see note: 7).
  • You may use each waypoint only once. Think of them like tiles in the real game of Scrabble, once they are used they are no longer available to you.
  • To meet the requirements of the Virtual Rewards - Guidelines you must also go to the posted coordinates, outside the main entrance to the Wellington Railway Station where the red metal sculpture of the dancer is, and message me with the number of bolts being used to secure the red metal base to the concrete. You do not need to wait for a response, I will only reply if there is a problem.

Logging

  • Write your word, in CAPITALS, as the first word of your log.
  • Attach all of your photos to your log in the order that spells your word
    (see note: 8).
  • Name each photo with the assigned letter (see note: 8).

Scoring (optional)

What's a game without a winner. Feel free to include your Scrabble score in your log.
  • Each letter has a points value, the same as in a real game of Scrabble. Add the points together to get your score.
  • Double Scoring
    • If you can include a train or cable car in any of your photos then you can double the points scored for that letter.
    • If you can include a train or cable car in all of your photos then you can double the points score for your whole word.
  • Triple Scoring
    • If you can include two or more trains or cable cars (two different ones) in any of your photos then you can triple the points scored for that letter.
    • If you can include two or more trains or cable cars (two different ones) in all of your photos then you can triple the points score for your whole word.
  • Unlike real Scrabble, you may not combine a double or triple letter score with a double or triple word score.
  • Be aware, it may not be possible to include trains or cable cars in all of your photos required. Choose your letters carefully.
  • For the purposes of scoring, the word train is not a train.

Notes

  1. You can use this site to verify if your word is acceptable. As Geocaching is a family game, no offensive words will be permitted. Please use common sense.
  2. If you are using your Geocaching name as your chosen word and it has any non-alphabetical characters in it, they can be ignored.
  3. If you are using your Geocaching name as your chosen word, it must have been your Geocaching name for at least three months before logging a find here, and must remain your Geocaching name for at least three months after logging a find here.
  4. If a word already used is your Geocaching name, you are allowed to use it regardless of it having been used before.
  5. As per the Virtual Rewards - Guidelines a picture of yourself is not required. Only your Geocaching name is required and must be clearly visible and readable in your photos.
  6. Your Geocaching name in your photos can be represented in any way you like, including (but not limited to) writing on a piece of paper, writing or your hand, Scrabble tiles stuck to a ruler, sign writing in the sky. The only requirement is that both the item described and your Geocaching name are clearly visible and readable in your photo.
  7. There is a limit of 99 Additional Waypoints that can be included with a Geocache listing, so the locations of the two waypoints assigned to 'blank' are only listed at the end of the Waypoint Summary.
  8. Attaching multiple photos, and editing the name of your photo, can be tricky when using your phone. You may find using the web browser on your phone or a larger device easier than the Geocaching App.
  9. If you come across a waypoint where the item described is no longer available, please let me know by message. Once verified I will update the waypoint requirement.

Reminder

  • Each photo must included your Geocaching name and the item described.
  • You may use each waypoint only once.
