Geocache Description:

This virtual cache is located on Kalemegdan  fortress  at a place with a fantastic view. Enjoy the view and the history behind it.

The Defterdar Gate is located opposite the Sahat Gate, almost in the middle of the northwestern rampart of the Upper Town. The gate gained its name in the 18th century — defterdar is a Turkish word meaning finance officer or treasurer, especially a provincial accountant general. At the site of the Defterdar Gate in the Middle Ages, there was a smaller (northern) gate that led from the moat in front of the former castle to the Lower Town, representing the only direct connection between these two most important parts of the Belgrade Fortress.

The current gate was built in the last decade of the 17th century, during the first works on the renovation of the existing fortifications and the construction of new bastion artillery forts. It was built in the form of a vaulted passage through the rampart and its external portal was modeled in the baroque style, designed by Andrea Cornaro. The Defterdar Gate was renovated in 1960. Today, the fastest way to reach the Lower Town is through this gate, along the path that leads next to the Great Gunpowder Warehouse.
