The Landmark and History
Named in honour of Queen Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, wife of King William IV, the city of Adelaide was founded in 1836 as the planned capital for the only freely-settled British province in Australia. Colonel William Light designed the city centre and chose its location close to the River Torrens. Light's design, now listed as a national heritage, set out the city centre in a grid layout known as "Light's Vision", interspaced by wide boulevards and large public squares, and surrounded by parklands.
Colonel William Light, the first Surveyor-General of South Australia adapted maritime navigation techniques for determining a ship's position at sea (coordinates of latitude and longitude) to define property boundaries. Light was considered ahead of his time, being the first surveyor in the world to use a trigonometrical (triangles and angles) survey to fix property boundaries, and lay out the proportions of a city.
Light devised and implemented the world's first coordinated cadastre, employing a Trigonometrical Survey of the District of Adelaide and the plains, four times more accurate than the contemporary British Ordnance Survey.
Unveiled on the 2nd May 2017, the 800mm wide bronze plaque commemorates the 180th Anniversary of the commencement of Light’s District of Adelaide (2 May 1837). The plaque has been placed at the exact point where Light began his historic survey of Adelaide and the plains. This location is referred to Trig Station A and was used as a base point for many other trigonometrical points in the region. This plaque honours Light's legacy, the skills he employed and the vision he brought to life.
