Il Tempio Capitolino venne eretto nel 73 d.C. per volontà dell'Imperatore Vespasiano. Nel IV secolo d.C. viene abbandonato e distrutto. Durante il medioevo tutta l'area del vecchio tempio viene travolta dagli smottamenti del colle Cidneo, rimanendo completamente sepolta. I suoi resti sono stati riportati alla luce dagli scavi archeologici realizzati, a partire dal 1823, per interessamento del comune di Brescia e dell'Ateneo. Nel 1826 i lavori di recupero ebbero un notevole impulso grazie agli importanti ritrovamenti che, nell'intercapedine dell'alto muro posteriore del tempio, riportarono alla luce numerosi reperti bronzei fra i quali la Vittoria Alata. In quegli anni vennero demolite alcune costruzioni popolari e un piccolo parco, che erano stati costruiti sopra l'area archeologica. Una prima azione di restauro ricostruttivo, ad opera degli architetti Luigi Basiletti e Rodolfo Vantini, viene attuata per ospitare nelle tre celle del tempio il Museo Patrio, primo Museo Civico di Brescia, inaugurato nel 1830. Da allora, nelle murature ricostruite, sono alloggiate diverse lapidi romane ritrovate in quegli anni in città e in provincia e qui collocate sotto la guida all'archeologo Giovanni Labus. Un successivo intervento di restauro, con integrazioni alla ricostruzione in alzato delle tre celle e soprattutto del pronao, risale a lavori eseguiti tra il 1935 e il 1936, mediante l'utilizzazione di laterizi che integrano le parti mancanti e consentono di sorreggere quelle originarie. L'ultimo restauro è stato concluso nel 2013 ed ha riportato in luce la decorazione e la pavimentazione originaria risalente al I secolo d.C.

The Capitoline Temple was erected in 73 AD at the behest of Emperor Vespasian. In the 4th century AD it was abandoned and destroyed. During the Middle Ages the entire area of the old temple was swept away by the landslides of the Cidneo Hill, remaining completely buried. Its remains were brought to light by archaeological excavations carried out, starting in 1823, at the interest of the Municipality of Brescia and the Athenaeum. In 1826, the restoration work was given a major boost thanks to the important findings that, in the cavity of the high rear wall of the temple, brought to light numerous bronze artefacts including the Winged Victory. In those years, a number of public buildings and a small park, which had been built over the archaeological area, were demolished. An initial reconstructive restoration, by architects Luigi Basiletti and Rodolfo Vantini, was carried out to house the Museo Patrio, Brescia's first Civic Museum, inaugurated in 1830, in the temple's three cells. Since then, the reconstructed walls have housed several Roman tombstones found during those years in the city and province and placed here under the guidance of archaeologist Giovanni Labus. Subsequent restoration work, with additions to the elevation reconstruction of the three cells and especially the pronaos, dates back to work carried out between 1935 and 1936, using bricks to supplement the missing parts and to support the original ones. The most recent restoration was completed in 2013 and brought to light the original decoration and flooring dating back to the 1st century AD.
