Na vrhu Smledniškega hriba stoji vila – Špelkina vila. Na njej je zanimiva legenda, ki govori
o krutem graščaku, ki je potem, ko ni hotel z njim igrati nihče od okoliških graščakov, povabil
na partijo samega hudiča in pri igri na vse ali nič izgubil tako življenje, dušo in svojo hčer, ki
se je spremenila v kačo, ki čaka pastirčka, ki jo bo rešil iz uroka.

Legenda pravi: »Smledniški graščak je kockal dneve in noči in priigral veliko premoženje,
vendar je ob tem izgubil vse soigralce. Povabil je zato k igri samega hudiča. Kockala sta vso
noč in graščak je izgubljal igro za igro. Zaigral je grad, svojo dušo in celo svojo hčer. Tiste
noči se je nad gradom razbesnela strašna nevihta, prihodnje jutro pa so grajski služabniki
zaman iskali graščaka in njegovo hčer. Videli so le kačo v bližini grajskega zidu. Nihče ni
dvomil, da je ta kača graščakova hči, zakleta v kačo.
Nekega dne je neki pastir pasel ovce na grajskem hribu. Nenadoma je zagledal kačo, ki je
spregovorila z žalostnim glasom: »Če bi se bil ti danes umil, bi rešil mene in dobil bi zlatnike
iz mojih treh vreč polnih zlata, tako pa si zapravil mojo in svojo srečo.« Skrivnostna kača je

pogumni (plezanje po skalah ni potrebno).

At the top of Smlednik hill stands a villa – Špelkina vila. There is an interesting legend on it,
telling about a cruel lord who, after refusing to play with him by none of the surrounding
lords, invited the game of the devil himself. When they played all or nothing, the squire lost
his life, soul and his daughter, which turned into a snake and still waiting for a shepherd to
save her from the spell.
Legend says: “The lord of Smlednik Castle playes dice day and night and won a large
fortune, but lost all his gambling companions, so he invited the devil himself for a game. They
gambled all night long and the squire lost game after game. He staked his castle, his soul and
even his own daughter. That night, a terrible storm descended upon the castle. Next morning
the castle servants searched in vain for the squire and his daughter. All they saw was a snake
ner the castle wall. Nobody doubted that it was squire’s daughter, turned to a snake.
One day, a shepherd boy, grazing his sheep on the castle hill, saw a snake. It sighed sadly:
“Had you washed today, I would have been rescued and you would have gotten golden coins
from my three bags. You wasted your and my happiness.” Then the mysterious snake
disappeared and was never seen again.”
