Janosch urodził się w Zabrzu - Porembie w 1931 roku. Czternaście lat później został wysiedlony do Niemiec. Aktualnie mieszka na Teneryfie. Pisze książki w języku niemieckim,ale mówi o sobie : „Czuję się Ślązakiem, to moja narodowość, to moja religia”.
Pseudonim Janosch powstał (jak mówi anegdota), kiedy skierował do druku swoje pierwsze opowiadanie Historia konia Wałka (1960) i podpisał je „Janusz”, co niemiecki zecer „poprawił” na Janosch.

Janosch was born in Zabrze-Poremba in 1931. Fourteen years later he was deported to Germany. Currently lives in Tenerife. He writes books in German, but says about himself: "I feel Silesian, it's my nationality, it's my religion."
The pseudonym Janosch was created (according to an anecdote) when he sent his first story, The Story of Wałek's Horse, to print (1960) and signed it "Janusz", which a German typesetter "corrected" to Janosch.
