Casino Constanța is an emblematic building of the city, located on the seafront of the Black Sea, in the historic center. It is a monument of architecture and culture, which witnessed many important events in the history of Romania.
It was built on the site where there was a wooden building, called Kursaal, which was demolished in 1902. The initial project of the casino was made by the architect Petre Antonescu, who proposed a style inspired by the traditions of Romanian art. The final project of the casino was made by the French architect Daniel Renard, who chose an Art Nouveau style, influenced by the great European casinos. The construction of the casino began in 1904 and was completed in 1910, when it was inaugurated in the presence of Prince Ferdinand.
The building impresses with its elegant shape, which harmonizes with the marine landscape, with its refined decorations, which combine floral, geometric and marine elements, and with the stained glass window in the shape of a fan, which dominates the main facade. The Casino was intended for entertainment and recreation of tourists, but also for organizing balls, concerts, exhibitions and conferences. Here came prominent personalities of Romanian culture and politics, such as kings Carol I and Ferdinand, writers Ion Luca Caragiale and Liviu Rebreanu, painters Nicolae Grigorescu and Ștefan Luchian, or musicians George Enescu and Ciprian Porumbescu.
The Casino was affected by the two world wars, being bombed, devastated and transformed into a field hospital. After 1948, it was nationalized and transformed into a cultural house, restaurant and tourist office. The last major renovation took place between 1986 and 1988, after which the building was abandoned and degraded.
Currently, the Casino has been restored with the purpose to bring back the building to its former glory and to reintegrate it into the cultural and tourist circuit of the city.
The Casino is a symbol of Constanța, which deserves to be admired and appreciated by all those who love beauty and history.
