ZGODOVINA MESTA NA KRATKO
Podatki o prazgodovini mesta Kamnik so zelo nenatančni, podobe medle, sklepamo lahko le na podlagi nekaterih dokazov. Obdobje migracij, ko je rimski imperij že bil pred svojim propadom, je zavito v popolno temo. V tej temačnosti se je rodil Kamnik, katerega začetke lahko povezujemo le z nastankom legend in bajk.
Srednjeveški Kamnik se je po stoletjih anonimnosti pojavil v vsej svoji veličini in živel pod okriljem Starega in Malega gradu. V srednjem veku je bilo mesto cvetoče obrtniško središče s kovnico denarja in dom številnih znanih dinastičnih rodbin. Kamnik se v pisnih virih prvič omenja v sredini 12. stoletja, v času, ko je bil center obširnih kranjskih posesti znane bavarske plemiške rodbine, grofov Andeških. Le-ti so svojo pomembnost izkazovali tudi s kovnico denarja, ki je na Malem gradu po letu 1220 kovala novce z napisom »Civitas Stein«. Meščani se v pisnih virih prvič omenjajo leta 1229, mesto pa je mestne pravice dobilo že prej.
LEGENDA O KAMNIŠKI VERONIKI
Pred davnimi časi so v Kamniku živeli trije bratje. Izučili so se za duhovnike in želja meščanov je bila, da bi vsi trije prvo mašo darovali v novi cerkvi. Zbrali so denar in začeli zidati cerkev na griču nad mestnim jedrom. Vendar pa jim je pred koncem gradnje zmanjkalo denarja in zanj so morali prositi bogato grofico Veroniko, ki je živela v gradu ob cerkvi.
Lepa in mlada grofica je bila znana po svoji prevzetnosti in skoposti. Ob njihovi prošnji je tako le prevzetno zaklela: »Poberite se berači! Raje se pri tej priči spremenim v kačo, kot da bi dala en sam dinar za vaše prazno delo!« Pravično nebo je slišalo to kletev in Veronika se je začela spreminjati v pol žensko in pol kačo, zemlja pod njo pa se je odprla in jo pogoltnila v svoje globine. Tik pred tem pa je s pestjo udarila v skalo, na kar še danes spominja odtis, ki je viden ob vhodu na Mali grad.
Grad je zajelo neurje, ki ga je podrlo do tal. Ukleta Veronika, skrita pod Malim gradom, med svojimi zakladi še danes čaka na rešitelja. Ta se bo moral zibati v smrekovi zibelki in z leskovo šibo trikrat udariti. Po tretjem udarcu se bo ukleta Veronika spremenila v prelepo grofično. Tisti, ki jo bo odrešil, bo postal njen mož in lastnik zakladov.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE TOWN
The information about the prehistory of Kamnik is very imprecise, the images are vague, and we can only draw conclusions from some evidence. The period of migration, when the Roman Empire was on the verge of collapse, is shrouded in total darkness. It was in this darkness that Kamnik was born, the beginnings of which can only be linked to the creation of legends and fables.
After centuries of anonymity, medieval Kamnik emerged in all its glory, living under the auspices of the Old and Small Castles. In the Middle Ages, the town was a thriving crafts centre with a mint and home to many famous dynastic families. Kamnik is first mentioned in written records in the middle of the 12th century, at a time when it was the centre of the extensive Kranj estates of the famous Bavarian noble family, the Counts of Andes. The Andes family also demonstrated their importance with a mint, which minted coins with the inscription "Civitas Stein" at the Small Castle after 1220. The townspeople are first mentioned in written sources in 1229, but the town had already been granted town rights earlier.
THE LEGEND OF VERONIKA
Long ago, three brothers lived in Kamnik. They were trained as priests and it was the wish of the townspeople that all three of them should celebrate their first Mass in the new church. They collected money and started to build a church on a hill above the town centre. However, they ran out of money before the construction was finished and had to ask the rich Countess Veronika, who lived in the castle next to the church, for money.
The beautiful and young Countess was known for her extravagance and stinginess. So, when they asked her, she just cursed, "Beggars, get a grip! I'd rather turn into a snake than give a single dime for your empty work!" The righteous heavens heard this curse, and Veronica began to change into half woman and half serpent, and the earth beneath her opened up and swallowed her into its depths. Just before that, she struck a rock with her fist, which is still visible today at the entrance to the Small Castle.
The castle was swept up in a storm and was crushed to the ground. Hidden beneath the Small Castle, the cursed Veronica is still waiting for a rescuer among her treasures. She will have to swing in a spruce cradle and strike three times with a hazel whip. After the third blow, the cursed Veronica will be transformed into a beautiful countess. The one who saves her will become her husband and the owner of the treasures.
