Santa Maria and Santa Cecilia in Trastevere with ❤ Virtual Cache

CONTESTO

Trastevere è un quartiere molto caratteristico di Roma e probabilmente il più vitale della città, con una vivace vita notturna e centinaia di ristoranti e locali. Ma si tratta anche di un quartiere con una grande ricchezza di beni storici, architettonici e culturali. Tra questi, sicuramente spiccano le due basiliche, collocate da un lato e dall'altro di Viale di Trastevere: Santa Maria in Trastevere e Santa Cecilia in Trastevere.  

 La Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere (vedi Waypoint) si trova nella piazza omonima in cui sono collocate le coordinate di questo Cache Virtuale.
Secondo la tradizione, la basilica venne fondata da papa Callisto I (217-222), nel luogo in cui dal terreno sgorgò dell'olio, e compiuta da Giulio I (337-352).
Durante l'VIII e il IX secolo, vennero aggiunte le navate laterali, risistemato il presbiterio e scavata la confessione, nella quale furono poste le spoglie di alcuni martiri tra cui quelle di san Callisto, fondatore della basilica.
La struttura architettonica attuale risale alla ricostruzione effettuata nel 1138-1148, con materiale in parte di spoglio proveniente dalle Terme di Caracalla, e voluta da papa Innocenzo II (1130-1143). Il pontefice non riuscì a vedere il compimento e la decorazione della basilica, ma lasciò, tuttavia, i mezzi economici necessari per condurre a termine i lavori.
Nel XVI secolo, il cardinale austriaco Marco Sittico Altemps fece realizzare la Cappella della Madonna della Clemenza e alcune di quelle laterali su progetto di Martino Longhi il Vecchio.
Nel 1702, papa Clemente XI fece riedificare il portico e modificare la facciata su progetto di Carlo Fontana.
Durante il pontificato di Pio IX, tra il 1866 ed il 1877, la chiesa fu sottoposta ad un articolato restauro per opera dell'architetto Virginio Vespignani.

 La Basilica di Santa Cecilia in Trastevere (vedi Waypoint) è situata nella piazza omonima e la leggenda vuole che sorga sulla casa familiare di Cecilia, « [...] vergine illustre, nata da nobile stirpe romana», che subì il supplizio verso il 220.

La Legenda Aurea narra che papa Urbano I, che aveva convertito il marito di lei, Valeriano, ed era stato testimone del martirio, « [...] seppellì il corpo di Cecilia tra quelli dei vescovi e consacrò la sua casa trasformandola in una chiesa, così come gli aveva chiesto».

Il Titulus Caeciliae è in effetti attestato già dal V secolo. All'inizio del IX secolo papa Pasquale I, grande recuperatore di reliquie ed edificatore di chiese (Santa Maria in Domnica, Santa Prassede), ebbe in sogno la visione di Cecilia che gli rivelava la propria sepoltura; fece quindi erigere la chiesa in forma basilicale sul luogo della precedente e vi traslò il corpo.

Durante i lavori di ristrutturazione eseguiti nel 1599 dal cardinale Paolo Emilio Sfondrati (nipote di papa Gregorio XIV, e il cui monumento funebre è quello visibile nel portico, a destra), fu aperto il sepolcro di marmo e nella ulteriore cassa di cipresso che esso racchiudeva si ritrovò il corpo quasi integro della santa, vestito di bianco e con il segno delle ferite sul collo. L'evento fu considerato miracoloso tanto che anche papa Clemente VIII andò a constatarlo. Si commissionò allo scultore Stefano Maderno la riproduzione della figura così com'era stata ritrovata. L'eccezionale opera in marmo pario, attualmente esposta sotto l'altare maggiore, testimonia nei secoli l'evento.

MOTIVO DEL NOME DEL CACHE: UN ANEDDOTO

Il nome del cache è legato ad un aneddoto romantico i cui protagonisti sono proprio i due owner del cache stesso, che vivono a Trastevere! Per il loro primo appuntamento, essi decisero di incontrarsi a Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, esattamente 4 anni prima della data di pubblicazione di questo cache. Purtroppo, uno dei due si confuse e andò invece a Santa Maria in Trastevere! All'ora stabilita, quindi, i due si trovavano: uno davanti ad una delle basiliche rilevanti per questo cache e l'altro davanti all'altra basilica! Dopo un contatto telefonico, riuscirono ad incontrarsi finalmente a Santa Maria in Trastevere e poi fecero insieme la loro prima passeggiata, molto emozionante, verso Santa Cecilia, per poi infine tornare dall'altra parte per la cena. Questo Virtual Cache è quindi anche una celebrazione del quarto anniversario di quell'importante giorno e di quell'episodio che si svolse proprio da queste parti!

ISTRUZIONI PER LOGGARE IL CACHE

Per loggare questo cache occorre:
A. Scattare una foto in cui si veda la facciata di Santa Maria in Trastevere e, preferibilmente nello stesso giorno, un'altra foto in cui si veda la facciata di Santa Cecilia. Le due foto possono (ma non devono) mostrare il volto del giocatore o il suo GPS/Smartphone e dovrebbero preferibilmente (facoltativo) mostrare le mani del giocatore sul posto che fa vedere una copia di un giornale quotidiano di diffusione nazionale edito a Roma (Il Messaggero o Il Tempo o La Repubblica) nella data del giorno del log, nonché un cartello su cui sia scritto ben visibile il Nickname del giocatore. E' possibile comperare il giornale per esempio presso l'edicola di Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere. Le due foto non devono essere dei collage creati col computer o con altre apparecchiature, ma due semplici scatti, e devono essere allegate al log.

CONTEXT

Trastevere is a very characteristic neighborhood of Rome and probably the most lively in the city, with a burstling nightlife and hundreds of restaurants and clubs. But it is also a neighborhood with a great wealth of historical, architectural and cultural assets. Among these, the two basilicas certainly stand out, located on one side and the other of Viale di Trastevere: Santa Maria in Trastevere and Santa Cecilia in Trastevere.

 The Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere (see Waypoint) is located in the square of the same name where the coordinates of this Virtual Cache are located.
According to tradition, the basilica was founded by Pope Callistus I (217-222), in the place where oil flowed from the ground, and completed by Julius I (337-352).
During the 8th and 9th centuries, the side naves were added, the presbytery was rearranged and the confession was excavated, in which the remains of some martyrs were placed, including those of Saint Callixtus, founder of the basilica.
The current architectural structure dates back to the reconstruction carried out in 1138-1148, with partly spoiled material coming from the Baths of Caracalla, and commissioned by Pope Innocent II (1130-1143). The pontiff was unable to see the completion and decoration of the basilica, but nevertheless left the financial means necessary to complete the work.
In the 16th century, the Austrian cardinal Marco Sittico Altemps had the Chapel of the Madonna della Clemenza and some of the lateral ones built based on a design by Martino Longhi the Elder.
In 1702, Pope Clement XI had the portico rebuilt and the façade modified based on a design by Carlo Fontana.
During the pontificate of Pius IX, between 1866 and 1877, the church underwent a complex restoration by the architect Virginio Vespignani.

 The Basilica of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere (see Waypoint) is located in the square of the same name and legend has it that it stands on the family home of Cecilia, « [...] illustrious virgin, born of a noble Roman lineage», who suffered torture around 220 A.D.

The Golden Legend tells that Pope Urban I, who had converted her husband, Valerian, and had witnessed her martyrdom, « [...] buried Cecilia's body among thmust ose of the bishops and consecrated her house, transforming it into a church , just as he had asked."

The Titulus Caeciliae is in fact attested as early as the 5th century. At the beginning of the 9th century Pope Paschal I, a great recoverer of relics and builder of churches (Santa Maria in Domnica, Santa Prassede), had a vision of Cecilia in a dream who revealed her own burial to him; he therefore had the basilica-shaped church built on the site of the previous one and moved her body there.

During the renovation works carried out in 1599 by Cardinal Paolo Emilio Sfondrati (nephew of Pope Gregory, and whose funerary monument is the one visible in the portico, on the right), the marble tomb was opened and in the further cypress coffin it contained the almost intact body of the saint was found, dressed in white and with the sign of wounds on her neck. The event was considered miraculous so much so that even Pope Clement VIII went to see it. The sculptor Stefano Maderno was commissioned to reproduce the figure as it was found. The exceptional work in Parian marble, currently displayed under the main altar, bears witness to the event over the centuries.

REASON FOR THE NAME OF THE CACHE: AN ANECDOTE

The name of the cache is linked to a romantic anecdote whose protagonists are the two owners of the cache itself, who live in Trastevere! For their first date, they decided to meet in Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, exactly 4 years before the publication date of this cache. Unfortunately, one of them got confused and went to Santa Maria in Trastevere instead! At the appointed time, therefore, the two found themselves: one in front of one of the relevant basilicas for this cache and the other in front of the other basilica! After a telephone contact, they managed to finally meet in Santa Maria in Trastevere and then took their first very emotional walk together towards Santa Cecilia, and then finally returned to the other side for dinner. This Virtual Cache is therefore also a celebration of the fourth anniversary of that important day and of that episode that took place right here!

INSTRUCTIONS TO LOG THE CACHE

To log this cache you need:
A. Take a photo in which one can see the facade of Santa Maria in Trastevere and, preferably on the same day, another photo in which you one see the facade of Santa Cecilia. The two photos can (but do not have to) show the player's face or his GPS/Smartphone and should preferably (optional) show the player's hands on the spot holding a copy of a national daily newspaper published in Rome (Il Messaggero or Il Tempo or La Repubblica) on the date of the log day, as well as a sign on which the player's Nickname is clearly written. It is possible to buy the newspaper for example at the news kiosk in Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere. The two photos must not be collages created with the computer or other devices, but two simple shots, and must be attached to the log. See examples of correct and incorrect photos below (taken on January 21st, 2024).

B.
