Queen Elizabeth Park is one of the best family parks in New Zealand. You can feed the ducks, play on the KidsOwn Playground, walk over the swing bridge to visit the deer, have a round of mini golf or ride on the classic miniature train. There is also the Masterton Skate Park, the Central Wairarapa BMX Track, croquet and lawn bowling clubs. Or, take a pedal boat out onto the lake, visit the aviaries, and have a picnic at the rose gardens.
When Masterton was surveyed in 1854 the site was set aside for "Publick Reserve" and leased for grazing. In 1875, after a successful petition, the land was designated a public recreation reserve for the town. A publicly elected trust was formed in 1877, with plans for the first major planting in 1878. The park was known as "Masterton Park" until 1954 when it was renamed after the newly-crowned monarch, Queen Elizabeth. The Pioneer Cemetery, attached to the park, contains the graves of many of Masterton's early families.
The requirements to log this cache are easy. Simply take a photo of yourself, or your Geocaching name, at the Miniature Railway Station. Extra points if you are on the train. Upload the photo with your log.
When I was awarded a Virtutal 4.0 cache I knew I wanted to place it someone meaningful, so this decision was a no brainer. Queen Elizabeth Park is one of my favourite places in the entire world.
