Per gli amanti della natura e in particolare del trekking e del bird watching, l'Isola d'Elba offre quanto di meglio si possa desiderare per praticare l'escursionismo.
La zona alle pendici del Monte Capanne è caratterizzata da macchia mediterranea e grandi rocce granitiche, che per erosione dal vento, hanno assunto col tempo curiose e particolari forme.
Con un po' d'attenzione e di fortuna si possono osservare isolati branchi di mufloni o il maestoso volo di qualche splendido rapace.
La cima del Monte Capanne (1.019m slm) può essere raggiunta da Marciana Alta con partenza presso la porta di Sant'Agabito, tramite l’impegnativo sentiero 101 che solca un bosco di faggi, castagni e carpini in circa 6 ore, lunghezza: 8,3 km, con un dislivello di 785 metri.
La passeggiata riserva un’ulteriore sorpresa: a metà strada si incontra il suggestivo romitorio di San Cerbone, che ricorda, oggi con forme cinquecentesche, l’eremitaggio del vescovo di Populonia, costretto a riparare sull’isola dopo le varie ondate di invasioni barbariche del secolo VI d.C.
Attenzione: in loco c’è una cache tradizionale da cercare, così come sulla vetta del Monte Capanne.
Per l’ascesa, in alternativa ci si può avvalere di una cabinovia (verificare orari e costi) che con le sue gabbiette biposto gialle permette di volare, con cuore e sguardo, sul mare dell’Elba, passando in rassegna la costa occidentale e, magari, intravedere anche la Corsica, nei giorni di particolare sereno.
L’arrivo è a quasi mille metri di quota. Dalla località Pozzatello (375m slm) fino a Torretta occorrono 18 minuti e si può poi conquistare a piedi la cima del monte lungo un agevole sentiero e da lì, oltre a distinguere facilmente l'intera sagoma dell'Isola d'Elba - riconoscendo paesi, spiagge, promontori e golfi - si gode di una vista unica sull’arcipelago toscano: Gorgona, Capraia, Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio.

Per il found di questa virtual è necessario allegare al proprio log una foto presa sulla sommità del Monte nella quale si veda distintamente l’antenna dell’immagine sottostante insieme al volto del geocacher oppure un foglietto col nickname oppure il suo GPS/cellulare.

The area on the slopes of Monte Capanne is characterized by Mediterranean scrub and large granite rocks, which, due to erosion by the wind, have taken on curious and particular shapes over time.
With a little attention and some luck you can observe isolated herds of mouflons or the majestic flight of some splendid birds of prey.

The walk offers a further surprise: halfway you come across the suggestive hermitage of San Cerbone, which recalls, today with sixteenth-century forms, the hermitage of the bishop of Populonia, forced to take refuge on the island after the various waves of barbarian invasions of 6th century AD.

For the ascent, you can alternatively use a cable car (check timetables and costs) which, with its yellow two-seater cages, allows you to fly, with heart and eyes, over the sea of Elba, passing through the western coast and, perhaps even glimpse Corsica, on particularly clear days.
The arrival is at almost a thousand meters above sea level. From Pozzatello (375m above sea level) to Torretta it takes 18 minutes and you can then reach the top of the mountain on foot along a short path and from there, in addition to easily distinguishing the entire outline of the Island of Elba - recognizing towns, beaches, headlands and gulfs - you can enjoy a unique view of the Tuscan archipelago: Gorgona, Capraia, Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio.
