Costruito nel 1883 il rifugio Nuvolau è il più antico delle Dolomiti.
Autentico nido d’aquila edificato sulla sommità del monte Nuvolau (2575 metri!), è rinomato fin dagli albori dell'alpinismo per il panorama mozzafiato.
Il panorama straordinario che si ammira dal monte Nuvolau è conosciuto da secoli e i sentieri che partono dal passo Falzarego, passo Giau, Castello di Andraz e 5 Torri sono molto antichi.
Dall'alba del turismo all'inizio dell' 800 le guide alpine d'Ampezzo erano fiere di portare i loro ospiti in cima a quel monte abbastanza facile da raggiungere e che allo stesso tempo offriva un panorama mozzafiato sulle Dolomiti.
Il rifugio Nuvolau è il primo ricovero costruito in alta montagna nel territorio di Cortina Ampezzo. Aprì i battenti agli escursionisti l’11 agosto del 1883, grazie alla volontà del colonnello Richard von Meerheimb di Dresda, che era riuscito a debellare una grave malattia ai polmoni trasferendosi in Ampezzo.
Per tramandare ai posteri la sua riconoscenza alla valle che l’aveva ospitato e guarito, il colonnello elargì del denaro alla locale Sezione del Club Alpino Tedesco e Austriaco, stabilendo l’obbligo d’impiegare il contributo per costruire un ricovero alpino.
Sotto la presidenza di Giuseppe Ghedina Tomasc, sorse così il primo rifugio di Cortina.
Memore del gesto del colonnello, la Sezione Ampezzo battezzò la costruzione “Sachsendankhütte”, ossia il “rifugio del ringraziamento del Sassone”.
La Sezione del CAI Cortina, riconfermata proprietaria al termine della Prima Guerra Mondiale, lo ampliò e nel 1930 offrì agli alpinisti un rifugio più grande e accogliente, meta oggi come allora degli appassionati dell’alta montagna.

Die 1883 erbaute Nuvolau-Schutzhütte ist die älteste in den Dolomiten.
Es handelt sich um ein authentisches Adlernest, das auf dem Gipfel des Mount Nuvolau (2575 Meter!) erbaut wurde und seit den Anfängen des Bergsteigens für sein atemberaubendes Panorama bekannt ist.
Das außergewöhnliche Panorama, das man vom Berg Nuvolau aus bewundern kann, ist seit Jahrhunderten bekannt und die Wege, die am Falzarego-Pass, am Giau-Pass, am Schloss Andraz und an den 5 Torri beginnen, sind sehr alt.
Seit den Anfängen des Tourismus zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts waren die Bergführer von Ampezzo stolz darauf, ihre Gäste auf den Gipfel dieses Berges zu führen, der leicht zu erreichen war und gleichzeitig einen atemberaubenden Blick auf die Dolomiten bot.
Die Nuvolau-Schutzhütte ist die erste im Hochgebirge der Region Cortina Ampezzo errichtete Schutzhütte. Am 11. August 1883 öffnete es seine Pforten für Wanderer, dank des Willens des Dresdner Oberst Richard von Meerheimb, dem es durch seinen Umzug nach Ampezzo gelungen war, eine schwere Lungenkrankheit auszurotten.
Um seine Dankbarkeit gegenüber dem Tal, das ihn aufgenommen und geheilt hatte, an die Nachwelt weiterzugeben, spendete der Oberst etwas Geld an die örtliche Sektion des Deutschen und Österreichischen Alpenvereins und verpflichtete sich, die Spende für den Bau einer Alpenschutzhütte zu verwenden.
Unter der Präsidentschaft von Giuseppe Ghedina Tomasc entstand die erste Zuflucht in Cortina.
In Anlehnung an die Geste des Obersten taufte die Sektion Ampezzo das Gebäude „Sachsendankhütte“, d. h. „Sassones Danksagungshütte“.
Die Sektion CAI Cortina, die am Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs erneut als Eigentümerin bestätigt wurde, erweiterte sie und bot Bergsteigern 1930 eine größere und einladendere Schutzhütte, die heute wie damals ein Ziel für Hochgebirgsbegeisterte ist.

Built in 1883, the Nuvolau refuge is the oldest in the Dolomites.
An authentic eagle's nest built on the top of Mount Nuvolau (2575 metres!), it has been renowned since the dawn of mountaineering for its breathtaking panorama.
The extraordinary panorama that can be admired from Mount Nuvolau has been known for centuries and the paths that start from the Falzarego pass, Giau pass, Andraz Castle and 5 Torri are very ancient.
From the dawn of tourism at the beginning of the 19th century, the Alpine guides of Ampezzo were proud to take their guests to the top of that mountain which was quite easy to reach and which at the same time offered a breathtaking view of the Dolomites.
The Nuvolau refuge is the first shelter built in the high mountains in the Cortina Ampezzo area. It opened its doors to hikers on 11 August 1883, thanks to the will of Colonel Richard von Meerheimb of Dresden, who had managed to eradicate a serious lung disease by moving to Ampezzo.
To pass on to posterity his gratitude to the valley that had hosted and healed him, the colonel donated some money to the local Section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club, establishing the obligation to use the contribution to build an Alpine shelter.
Under the presidency of Giuseppe Ghedina Tomasc, the first refuge in Cortina was born.
Mindful of the colonel's gesture, the Ampezzo Section christened the building "Sachsendankhütte", i.e. the "Sassone's thanksgiving shelter".
The CAI Cortina Section, reconfirmed as owner at the end of the First World War, expanded it and in 1930 offered mountaineers a larger and more welcoming refuge, a destination today as then for high mountain enthusiasts.
