🇪🇸 En el verano de 1966, esta comarca burgalesa se trasladó en el tiempo y en el espacio al Lejano Oeste para rodar la escena más mítica e icónica del denominado Spaghetti Western. El Monasterio de San Pedro de Arlanza se transformó en la Misión San Antonio y en los alrededores del pueblo de Carazo se alzó el fuerte unionista de Betterville. Por otro lado, el río Arlanza se convirtió en el Río Grande y en el Valle de Mirandilla, a pocos kilómetros de Santo Domingo de Silos, se elevó el Cementerio de Sad Hill, en el que se rodaría la mítica escena final de la película El Bueno, El feo y el Malo.
En esa última escena de "El bueno, el feo y el malo", Clint Eastwood (El bueno), y los actores Eli Wallach (El feo) y Lee Van Cleef (El malo) se encuentran en el cementerio, en el que se encontraban enterrados soldados de la Guerra de Secesión norteamericana, y se baten en duelo disputándose un botín que se encontraba enterrado en una de las tumbas. Se trata de una escena que duró un total de 20 minutos, en los que los tres protagonistas recorren casi cada metro del Cementerio de Sad Hill –que fue construído por miembros del Ejército Español y por vecinos de la zona, que también participaron como figurantes– y que ha terminado llevando a esta comarca burgalesa a lo más alto de la historia del cine. Una escena que estuvo acompañada musicalmente por el intenso tema "LA FIEBRE DEL ORO", del mítico compositor Ennio Morricone.
Este tema, a su vez, embelesó a los chicos de Metallica desde que vieron la película, y lo llevan usando para abrir sus conciertos desde los 80. Lo mejor de todo es que desde los últimos años proyectan también las escenas del filme para calentar motores, así que cada vez que toca Metallica todos los asistentes ven en las pantallas gigantes la provincia de Burgos.
Más allá de tu gusto por este tipo de películas, debes darte cuenta de la importancia de este lugar, de la magia que esconde y de todo lo que representa. Es un escenario mundial, que ha pasado a la historia del cine universal por la icónica escena que se rodó en el lugar en que te encuentras.
Por las piedras que pisas caminaron Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, Eli Wallach y Sergio Leone, protagonistas y director de la película. La música de Ennio Morricone retumba en este valle según te vas acercando a Sad Hill, y aunque él nunca estuvo aquí, descansa en este lugar para siempre.
Tras el rodaje el lugar fue abandonado y medio siglo después y durante varios años, los vecinos, agrupados en la ASOCIACIÓN CULTURAL SAD HILL trabajaron y restauraron la mayoría de las 5000 tumbas falsas que forman el cementerio de Sad Hill (que significa colina triste) y que fueron creadas por soldados del Ejército español que se pusieron a disposición de Sergio Leone para el rodaje del conocido spaghetti western. Además reconstruyeron y desenterraron el círculo central de piedra en el que tiene lugar el mítico duelo. 🇬🇧 In the summer of 1966, this Burgos region moved in time and space to the Far West to film the most mythical and iconic scene of the so-called Spaghetti Western. The Monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza was transformed into the Mission San Antonio and in the surroundings of the town of Carazo the unionist fort of Betterville was built. On the other hand, the Arlanza River became the Rio Grande and in the Mirandilla Valley, a few kilometers from Santo Domingo de Silos, the Sad Hill Cemetery was built, where the mythical final scene of the movie The Good, The Ugly and the Bad.
In that last scene of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", Clint Eastwood (The Good), and the actors Eli Wallach (The Ugly) and Lee Van Cleef (The Bad) meet in the cemetery, where They found buried soldiers from the American Civil War, and they fought a duel over loot that was buried in one of the tombs. It is a scene that lasted a total of 20 minutes, in which the three protagonists cover almost every meter of the Sad Hill Cemetery – which was built by members of the Spanish Army and by residents of the area, who also participated as extras – and that has ended up taking this Burgos region to the top of the history of cinema. A scene that was musically accompanied by the intense song "THE ECSTASY OF GOLD", by the legendary composer Ennio Morricone.
This song, in turn, enthralled the guys from Metallica since they saw the film, and they have been using it to open their concerts since the 80s. The best of all is that in recent years they have also projected scenes from the film to warm up their engines, so every time Metallica plays, all attendees see the province of Burgos on the giant screens.
Beyond your taste for this type of movies, you must realize the importance of this place, the magic it hides and everything it represents. It is a world stage, which has gone down in the history of universal cinema for the iconic scene that was filmed in the place where you are.
Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, Eli Wallach and Sergio Leone, stars and director of the film, walked on the stones under your feet. The music of Ennio Morricone echoes in this valley as you approach Sad Hill, and although he was never here, he rests in this place forever.
After filming the place was abandoned and half a century later and for several years, the neighbors, grouped in the SAD HILL CULTURAL ASSOCIATION worked and restored most of the 5,000 false graves that make up the Sad Hill cemetery and which were created by soldiers of the Spanish Army who made themselves available to Sergio Leone for the filming of the well-known spaghetti western. They also rebuilt and unearthed the central stone circle in which the mythical duel takes place.
