In 1936 deputy ET Wheadon took to the states deliberation board a proposal for the construction of a reservoir in St Saviours Valleys which would create a 1,090ML reservoir for Guernsey , which was suffering from water shortages.
After hours of solid debate and a desperate plea from the Rector of St Saviours to save the land and greenery in the parish the states voted to spend £220,000 to improve the use of land .
Three valleys in St Saviours were to be flooded, Les Choffin , Les Padins and St Saviours valley , in all six houses were sacrificed and 30 people moved out of the valleys.
The project was agreed and the work began in 1938 , work on the Dam was halted during World War II but commenced again in 1946 following the liberation from the occupying forces , it was completed in 1947.
Visually the reservoir is a huge inland lake on the map , also many smaller reservoirs and miles of pipes now supply the island with water.
In 2001 they opened up a 3 km nature Trail around the reservoir called the millennium walk . The millennium walk is a circular walk which takes about an hour , ( longer if your looking for caches ) , it is a hub for wildlife with wooded area and natural flowers and fresh water streams .
As for the farms and houses in the valleys , the remains of the walls are still visible on hot summers low water or drought conditions.
