Qatar has many fine tourist attractions but consistently ranked #1 is Souq Waqif, the traditional marketplace in Doha. This cache takes you to a piece of art that is also a popular meeting place in the heart of the souq.
César Baldaccini (1921-1998) was a noted sculptor at the forefront of the French 1960s Nouveau Réalisme movement. The original cast of the artist’s own thumb was produced for an exhibition on the theme of hands titled Le Main in 1965, in Paris. The artist then made a series of increasingly larger versions of the thumb. The motif of the thumb has since become the most well known of the artist’s subjects, but what you may not know is that he created the famous César awards for French cinema, and signs his work with his first name only, "César."
With artworks of this scale the work is almost always done with a team. In this case the partnering agency was the Bocquel Art Foundry, so a thumbs up to the collaborators who cast the thumbs (in polished bronze)!
To earn your cache:
1. On-site photo requirement:
On the artwork itself, there is information stating that eight copies of “The Thumb” were cast. Find this exact statement on the artwork, not on the wall, and take a photo showing you (or part of you) together with that specific text or marker.
2. Baluster count:
Opposite “The Thumb” is a wheelchair ramp with a balustrade.
Count all balusters in that balustrade and send me the total number along with the required photo!
