🇬🇧 Arguably the most famous building in Sarajevo is Sebilj in Baščaršija. With its beauty, pride and existence, it still defies time and conveys the beauty of the Bosnian capital as a true beauty.
Originally there was an official in the sebilja who filled tasas (vessels) with water and distributed them to thirsty passers-by.

Sebilj during the day / Sebilj danju
The word sebilj is of Arabic origin and means "a building on the road in which there is water". There used to be several sebiljas in Sarajevo, but in a catastrophic fire in 1697, all Sarajevo sebiljas were destroyed. The only remaining sebilj in Baščaršija, in its present form, was built way back in 1913, and with reason is considered a significant architectural monument of its era.
Evlija Celebija mentions that in 1660 there were 300 sebilja in Sarajevo, and only this one in Baščaršija has been preserved to this day.
Sebilj in Baščaršija was built of stone, wood and copper. An octagonal pedestal covered with finely crafted stone rests on the concrete foundation, above which is a richly and beautifully executed wooden structure with mušepci (wooden lattices) and airy openings, which gives a peculiar stamp of slenderness to the entire building.
As a result of the shelling of the city in 1992, the sebilj was damaged by shrapnel, so a minor repair followed in 1997, when the mushepci were repaired and the wooden structure was painted.
Sebilj was thoroughly restored in 2006, when the copper cover was replaced, the water supply and drainage were repaired, and the wood was protected.

Sebeilj in the evening / Sebilj uveče
