The Istana Negara is the official residence of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia), the monarch of Malaysia.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong is elected to a five-year term by the nine rulers of the Malay States. After a ruler has served as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, he may only stand for election once all rulers of the other states have also stood for election. At the time of publishing (2024), the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong is about to commence his term on 31 January 2024.
The current larger palace opened in 2011 and replaced the one in central Kuala Lumpur. The palace complex has an area of 97.65 hectares and 22 domes and is split into three main portions: the Formal Component, Royal Component and Administration Component. There are 3 entrances to the Palace:
1. The main gateway entrance via Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim flyover (the one you are currently at)
- Meant for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Raja Permaisuri Agong, Sultan and Sultanah of the State, Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Diplomats and Government Head, Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister and wife.
2. The second entrance located at Jalan Semantan - Dungun
- It is the main entrance for the royal guests and VIPs.
3. The third access located at Jalan Sri Hartamas
- For the general public that has an appointment with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong and also the Palace Administration's Staff.
