Geocache Description:

ENG

The Tartu railway station  was built in 1876 together with the construction of the Tapa-Tartu broad-gauge railway section, as a branch line of the Paldiski-Petersburg line completed in 1870. The first train arrived in Tartu on 21 August 1876. The construction of the Tallinn-Tartu railway was supported primarily by local industrialists and merchants who needed a road to deliver raw materials and goods. The Tartu-Valga-Riia branch was built in 1889 and the Tartu-Petseri railway in 1931. Before the First World War, there were also plans for a new railway line from Tartu railway station to Smolensk, but the outbreak of war put a spanner in the works.

The Tartu station building was built in 1875-1877 outside the then city of Tartu on the lands of the Tähtvere manor, on the tree-lined Maarjamõisa Street.

The main building of the station is a three-storey, cross-pitched building with a typical façade. According to the Register of Cultural Monuments, it is an outstanding example of 19th century wooden architecture. The station building has preserved intact its original exterior appearance, the structure of the rooms and the exterior and interior elements: the façade with its planking and plasterwork, the wooden choir, the canopy of the perron, the openings and railings, the interior with its decorative woodwork, the mirrored ceilings, the cornices, etc..

Tartu raudteejaam (vaksal) rajati koos laiarööpmelise Tapa–Tartu raudteelõigu rajamisega 1876. aastal, haruliinina 1870. aastal valminud Paldiski–Peterburi raudteeliinist.

Jaama peahoone on kolmeosaline, tüüpfassaadi järgi ehitatud ristviilkatusega. Kultuurimälestiste registri andmeil on see 19. sajandi puitarhitektuuri väljapaistev näide. Jaamahoones on terviklikult säilinud algupärane välisilme, ruumistruktuur ning eksterjööri- ja interjöörielemendid: fassaadi laudis ja krohvviimistlus, puitdekoor, perrooni varikatus, avatäited ja piirded, interjööris dekoratiivse kujundusega puittalastik, peegelvõlvlaed, karniisid jne.

Aarde logimiseks pead:
