Con questa cache virtuale vorrei mostrare le bellezze che ci sono qui nella sponda magra, ma che sono conosciute veramente da poche persone... a volte neppure dagli stessi abitanti.

"San Michele alla Rocca e il monumento ai caduti

Le notizie più antiche riguardanti questa chiesa sono riportate nel “Liber Notitiae Sanctorum Mediolani” di Goffredo da Bussero, una lista particolareggiata di tutte le chiese della Lombardia redatta alla fine del XIII secolo, dove si legge: “Lezedum plebe loco Montebelo ecclesia Sancti Micaelis et Santi Nazzarii”. Viene quindi citata in questa occasione anche la chiesa di San Nazario, demolita perché decadente nel XVI secolo su ordine di San Carlo Borromeo, in seguito alla sua visita del 1574.
Nel 1630, a causa della peste che imperversava in tutto il nord Italia, su iniziativa dell’allora parroco Giovanni Besozzi venne provvisoriamente trasformata in ospedale (lazzaretto) per accogliere i numerosi malati. Il 29 settembre 1631, come voto per la fine della peste, venne effettuato dalla popolazione un pellegrinaggio alla chiesetta e da allora nello stesso periodo viene sempre celebrata la sua festa.
Nel 1683 venne iniziato il primo restauro, terminato completamente nel 1727. Si presume che in questo periodo venne decorata la parte absidale con l’affresco ancora oggi visibile.
Nel 1883 venne attrezzata di nuovo ad ospedale in vista dell’epidemia di colera, dalla quale però rimase indenne la provincia di Varese.
Nel 1896 vennero fatti nuovi restauri, riguardanti principalmente il tetto, le finestre e l’imbiancatura interna. Il piccolo campanile, distrutto in epoca napoleonica e privato della campana, venne ricostruito nel 1910. Nuovi restauri vennero compiuti nel 1927.
Nel 1964 venne rinvenuto un cippo in pietra, che in seguito a studi risulta essere un’ara di periodo celtico o tardo-romano. Questo indica che prima della costruzione della chiesa cristiana vi si trovava già un edificio adibito al culto pagano. L’ara è attualmente esposta a sinistra dell’ingresso.
Nella collinetta sovrastante la chiesa, è stato costruito nel 1969 un monumento a ricordo dei caduti nella Seconda Guerra Mondiale, da cui si può ammirare la vista su Laveno, il lago e le montagne piemontesi.
Se arrivate al cache in auto, potete tranquillamente lasciarla di fronte alla chiesa. Anche se il cancelletto verso il monumento è chiuso, potete passarlo a destra o sinistra: il parchetto è sempre accessibile."

"San Michele alla Rocca and the war memorial

In 1964 was found a memorial stone, that as a result of studies is an altar of Celtic or late period-Roman. This indicates that prior to the construction of the Christian church there was already a building used for pagan worship. The altar is currently displayed at the left of the entrance.
On the hill above the Church, was built in 1969 a monument in memory of the fallen in World War II, from which you can admire the view of Laveno, the Lake and the mountains of Piedmont.
If you arrive at the cache drive, you can safely leave it in front of the Church. Even if the little gate is closed, you are authorized to pass at the side: the park is always open.
TO LOG THE CACHE:
you will have to take and upload three photographs where a part of you can also be seen (GPS, something of you or, as I do, a piece of paper where your geocaching nickname is written).
FIRST PHOTO: at the first reference point you will have to photograph the Lombard altar located to the left of the entrance to the church.
SECOND PHOTO: Once you arrive at GZ, the photograph must contain both the monument (or part of it).
THIRD PHOTO: again in GZ, an image of the panorama of the Gulf of Laveno will complete the work!
