Geocache Description:

I have a big sentiment to the my visits to San Vigilio di Marebbe. I have spent many winter holidays with my family in this village since my childhood, always having the great time and the big pleasure. Kronplatz mountain and a lot of ski slopes around that are located very close to San Vigilio di Marebbe were the place where I learned going skiing really perfectly. Coming back here hardly every year that’s my dream place for winter period.

There is a lovely and charming church located exactly in the centre of San Vigilio that is dedicated to Saint Vigilio. It was rebuilt in Rococo style between 1781 and 1782.

About the place:

In the heart of the picturesque village of San Vigilio di Marebbe stands the San Vigilio Parish Church, a religious structure of considerable historical and cultural importance. Dedicated to St. Vigilius, a bishop of Trent who lived in the 4th century and was martyred for his Christian faith, the church dates from the 18th century. The building is characterized by its Baroque style while inside, it has notable Gothic ornaments reflecting the era in which it was built. The flanking bell tower, with a height of about 82 meters, dominates the St. Vigil skyline and can be spotted from many parts of the village. With its white facade and tall steeple, the church is one of the village’s most important landmarks and a place of worship for local residents. Inside the church, visitors can admire a number of fascinating works of art. The main piece is the imposing high altar, which features a sculpture of martyred St. Vigilius. The frescoes on the walls and ceiling, depicting biblical scenes and saints, are equally impressive in their beauty and artistic detail. Another distinctive feature of the church is the organ, a masterpiece of art and craftsmanship. Built in 1851 by renowned organ builder Michael Pruner, the organ is still in use and is one of the most valuable instruments in this church.

Additionally there is an interesting monument of Catarina Lanz called “The Jean d’Arc of Tyrol” on the right side from the front of church, near the stone fence close to the street. You can read the short history of her life on informative table close to it.
