Geocache Description:

Putrajaya is Malaysia's administrative capital, located about 25 kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur. Its development reflects Malaysia's vision for modernization and strategic urban planning.

The area where Putrajaya now stands was previously known as Prang Besar, a rubber plantation estate during British colonial rule. The land was primarily agricultural and sparsely populated until the late 20th century.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Kuala Lumpur faced challenges such as overcrowding, traffic congestion, and the need for more space for government operations. Under Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, the Malaysian government decided to relocate its administrative functions to a new city.

Construction began in 1995 under the master plan of a modern, smart city with a focus on technology, greenery, and sustainable urban living. The city was named Putrajaya in honor of Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, Malaysia's first Prime Minister, where "Putra" means prince and "Jaya" means success in Sanskrit.

Putrajaya was carved out of Selangor state and officially became a Federal Territory in 2001, joining Kuala Lumpur and Labuan.

Putrajaya's design incorporated Islamic architecture with modern infrastructure, reflecting Malaysia's cultural heritage and aspirations. The city was built with a mix of government complexes, residential areas, parks, and man-made lakes. The centerpiece is the Putra Mosque, which sits beside the Putrajaya Lake, covering about 38% of the city's area.

By 1999, Malaysia’s government ministries and agencies began relocating from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya. It became the administrative and judicial center of Malaysia, while Kuala Lumpur remains the legislative and commercial capital.

Putrajaya boasts impressive landmarks, such as: Perdana Putra (Prime Minister's Office), Putra Bridge, Putra Mosque, Seri Wawasan Bridge, The Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC), and expansive green spaces like Taman Botani.

Putrajaya is often seen as a testament to Malaysia's ambitious efforts to blend modernity with tradition while addressing urban challenges.
