So I came out to ride Apoxee and headed down the Owahee trail and about halfway before getting to the big bridge and right before one of the monitoring stations, I came up on a twelve foot alliga7or sunning itself on the side of the bank. It was asleep, and didn’t care what anyone was doing. But it kind of freaked me out because I almost ran over it. Kept on riding, crossed the bridge and then came up on another al8igator sitting on the other side of the 8ank and dam sure almost ran that one over too! And then I saw another one and then another one, so I was like OK there’s alligators everywhere. As I was finishing up my ride, and following a way to come back from the Owahee Trail, and then head back over to the SWA where I was parked, so I’m coming back. There’s a long metal bri9ge, that you ride your bike across, or walk, and it just looked like a very cool photograph, so stopped t4e bike, got my phone out, and as I looked down, just under my feet, there was another nine foot alligator right underneath me! I was on a bridge, but it’s only six inches above the water. Snapped three pictures, and got the hec7 out of there.

When the water gets cold and then the sun comes out, and the air heats up, the alligators climb out of the water and onto the bank so that they can sun themselves and get warmed up. This phenomenon, known as thermoregulation, happens all over Florida especially during this time of the year. Alligators are ectothermic creatures, which means they rely on external sources of heat to regulate their body temperature. They control their body temperature by basking in the sun or moving to areas with warmer or cooler air or water temperatures. When they sunbathe, they absorb heat from the sun and warm their blood, which helps them to digest food and maintain their body temperature. Fun gator facts.
