All Saints Church, Rettendon is set up on a hill on the edge of Rettendon looking over the river Crouch valley and the busy A130.
The Parish Church of All Saints, located at the southern end of the parish, showcases a mix of architectural styles and periods. The Nave's origins are uncertain, but the South doorway, dating back to around 1200, provides a glimpse into its early history. The Chancel was reconstructed in the early 13th century and likely extended. The church underwent significant expansions in the 15th century, including the addition of the North Aisle, West Tower, North Chapel, and Vestry. Modern restoration efforts saw the addition of a pyramidal spire and the rebuilding of the South Porch.
Architectural highlights include the intriguing two-storeyed Vestry or Priest's House, featuring a carved 12th-century slab and 15th-century bench-ends.
The Chancel, with its modern east window, retains 13th-century elements. The Nave, adorned with a late 15th-century North Arcade, boasts a 1200-era South doorway. The West Tower, a 15th-century structure, stands proudly with its embattled parapet.
Fascinating fittings within the church include six bells, 17th-century brackets, notable brasses, a 17th-century chest in the vestry, and a 15th-century font. The North Aisle's roof, dating to the late 15th century, showcases exquisite craftsmanship.
Secular structures in the vicinity include a 16th-century barn at Rettendon Place and a variety of 17th-century timber-framed houses such as Pound Farm, Hyde Hall, a cottage, and the Hawk Inn near Battlesbridge Station.

When searching for this cache, beware of the sign that asks you to look out for bulls. I did not encounter any when placing the cache, but you never know. Stile itself is broken at the moment and a bit of a balancing act, so for that, I raised the terrain raiting for this reason. But I notified the church warden, who promised to look into this and get it repaired. And mostly, this place has stunning views. A real gem.
