Geocache Description:

16 March 2024, 15:00 - 16:00

Pi day occurs annually on March 14 but events are accessible to more people on weekends.  Therefore we will celebrate PI Day a couple days late so more people can participate.

Pi (π) is defined as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. In simpler terms, we divide all the way around a circle, by all the way across it.

Because the short version of mathematical Pi is 3.14, Pi Day is usually celebrated on March 14th.  (3.14 could be viewed as a the date - March 14, 3rd month, 14th day.)

The ancient Babylonians and Egyptians had some approximations but the Greeks, particularly Archimedes, gave us much closer approximations.

Even though the actual day will be past, we should celebrate because of what pi means to us.  Imagine math class without pi.  Think of all those story problems we would have missed out on.  And think about all the derivatives of pi that we enjoy such as cherry pie, pizza pie, apple pie, etc.  I hope to have some samples to enjoy.

We will meet at Anderson Snow Park from 3 to 4 PM.  Bring a chair, bring a friend, and come prepared to talk geocaching and other topics.  Come when you can, leave when you must.  Hope to see you there.
