The common dandelion, Taraxacum officinale, is a herbaceous perennial flower in the daisy family. It is often considered a weed, especially by lawn-proud gardeners, with its long taproots making it difficult to remove completely. The leaves grow in florets around the flower stems, either close to the ground or upright. The bright yellow flowers turn into round seed heads, commonly called clocks, that consist of a fruit at the base of a silvery fluffy parachute that allows them to be carried by the wind.
All parts of the plants are edible, with the flowers used for dandelion wine and dandelion & burdock, the leaves used in salads and the roots roasted to make a non-caffeinated coffee substitute. However it is also a diuretic, with many of its common names reflecting this, including the French name Pissenlit.
