Lesser celendine (Ficaria verna) or pilewort is a member of the buttercup family. It has dark green heart-shaped leaves that grow close to the ground, and bright yellow star-like flowers from January to April. It is found in woodlands, grassland and gardens, particularly in damp ground. It provides an early source of nectar to insects emerging from hibernation. Wordsworth may be famous for writing about daffodils, but he dedicated three poems to the lesser celandine, and it is also mentioned in works by Edward Thomas, D.H. Lawrence and C.S. Lewisβs The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.
Historically, celandines have been used to treat haemorrhoids (hence their alternative name) and possibly scurvy, though raw leaves contain a toxin called protoanemonin, which is destroyed by cooking.
