There are several species of wild violet, but the two most common are also easily confused – the sweet violet (Viola odorata), which is scented, and the common dog violet (Viola riviniana), which is not. Each have 5 oval petals and heart shaped leaves. Sweet violets, which can be white or lilac as well as purple, are edible, with candied violets used in cake decoration. They are also used in herbal medicine to treat ailments such as headache and depression.
The Common dog violet provides a source of food for rare butterflies, including several species of fritillary and flowers from April to June.
