Common wood sorrel, Oxalis acetosella, is also known as False Shamrock due to the shape of the leaves ("true"shamrock being a member of the clover family). Its white flowers appear between Easter and Pentecost, and so it is also called Alleluia in reference to the Psalms sung in this period. It is commonly found in deciduous woodland in the UK; as it doesn't tolerate disturbance well, its presence can be an indicator that the woodland is old. The leaves are edible, and contain oxaclic acid, which gives a sour taste, and also means that it should be eaten in moderation. While O. acetosella is the only native British member of the Oxalis family, many related species have been imported as ornamental plants in the garden.
