The oxeye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare) is the largest British native daisy (at up to 80cm tall) and is often found on verges, meadows and wasteland. Its white flower heads with a bright yellow centre (actually a cluster of flowers) are seen from May to September. It can spread both by seed and through underground rhizome. It is considered an invasive weed in many countries, as it is not palatable to livestock, and so affects pasture quality, and it can displace native species.
In mythology, it was believed to have links to divination and these remain in modern culture as the children’s game of chanting “he love me, he loves me not” while picking the petals. It is the national flower of Latvia.
