The national flower of Wales, the flowering of daffodils is believed by many to herald the start of Spring. Daffodils belong to the name Daffodil is Narcissus genus and Amaryllis family. They have flowers with six petal-like tepals surrounding a trumpet-shaped corona. While wild varieties are usually white and yellow, garden varieties also contain pink and orange colour variants. They can be either one colour or have contrasting tepals and corona. They are native to southwest Europe, and are the basis of the myth of Narcissus, an ancient Greek youth who fell in love with his own reflection and so was turned into a flower that would look down at water. The plants are toxic if eaten, but they also produce galantamine, which has been used to treat Alzheimer's disease.
