Geocache Description:

blanco = yeso
amarillo/beige/rosa pálido = tobas e ignimbritas
verde = clorito y epidota
transparente = halita (sal NaCl)

Rainbow Valley

The Rainbow Valley is located about 90 km north of San Pedro de Atacama and owes its name comes from the variety of colors found in the geological formations there Cretaceous can be seen: bright reds, beige, green, white, yellow, combined with white Salt and a spectacular blue sky.

Located immediately northwest of the town of San Pedro de Atacama one of the most spectacular structures in the region, the so-called Barros-Arana syncline a northeast axis over about 50 km and a periclinal termination in the southwest.

(Syncline, trough, syncline, in structural geology the part of a fold that is concavely curved with respect to the earth's surface. The rock layers rise to the sides, with the youngest layers lying in the core of the syncline in normal storage.)

The syncline is structurally located and formed at the base of the Domeyko Block by mainly continental, layered sedimentary rocks of the Albian-Maastrichtian and possibly the Danian, with the formations (from bottom to top): Tonel, Purilactis and Barros Arana The sequence (preferably Tonel and partly Purilactis) is called by the so-called Tonel-hypabyssal intrusives (Late Cretaceous - Paleocene) intersected; it is a matter of dark green, coarse-grained lamprophyres with a porphyry character (igneous rocks). The green color of these bodies is not due to the presence of copper, but rather to the presence of chlorite and epidote. The Tonel Formation in Rainbow Valley consists of limoliths (iron-bearing mineral mixture, brown ironstone) and fine reddish brown sand and layers of halite (salt NaCl) and gypsum, while the Purilactis Formation in the same sector consists of fine red, gray and black sandstones Deposits of layered siltstones exist. Finally, the sedimentary sequences are overlain by pyroclastic rocks of the Puripicar Formation. The Puripicar Formation, which is primarily pale pink to light gray tuffs and ignimbrites, are generally well welded and contain biotite, quartz and pumice crystals.

Rainbow Valley is a true open-air geological laboratory.

The colors of the rock are determined by the minerals contained in the rock

white = plaster

yellow/beige/pale pink = tuffs and ignimbrites

Brown-red tones = Limoliths, an iron-containing mineral mixture, brown iron stone

green = chlorite and epidote

transparent = halite (salt NaCl)

the transparent, glittering minerals that can be found everywhere here consist of selenite, a variety of the mineral gypsum.

In order to log this Earthcache as a find, you must answer the following questions:

Task 1 GZ Look towards the north. Describe the rocks? What color are the rocks and which mineral is responsible for them?

Task 2 Look at the rock to the south on WP1 and describe what you see. What colors do you see and which minerals are responsible? Are the layers clearly demarcated?

Task 3 A photo with you or your cacher name. There are attractive motifs everywhere!

The questions can be answered by reading the listing and observing on site.

Regenbogental

weiß = Gips

gelb/beige/blassrosa = Tuffe und Ignimbriten

braun-Rottöne = Limolithen ein eisenhaltiges Mineralgemisch, Brauneisenstein

grün = Chlorit und Epidot

transparent = Halit (Salz NaCl)
