文学座は1937年9月、久保田万太郎、岸田國士、獅子文六の文学者の発起によって創立されました。
「真に魅力ある現代人の演劇をつくりたい」「現代人の生活感情にもっとも密接な演劇の魅力を創造しよう」
本公演、アトリエの会、附属演劇研究所 という大きな三本柱を通してこの創立理念は生き続けています。
本公演では、様々な日本人作家の書き下ろしを上演する一方、海外作品でもシェイクスピア、チェーホフなどの名作に加えて、テネシー・ウィリアムズ、ソーントン・ワイルダーの作品をいち早く採り上げてきました。
また劇団の拠点である信濃町・アトリエで行われる「アトリエの会」は、従来の勉強会と意欲的で実験的な作品を上演しています。
1961年に開設した附属演劇研究所では、次代を担う俳優・スタッフの養成機関として、これまでに卒業生は3000人を超え、多方面で活動する人材を輩出し続けています。

Bungakuza was founded in September 1937 by literary figures Mantaro Kubota, Kunio Kishida, and Bunroku Shishi.

This founding philosophy continues to live on through the three main pillars of this school: this performance, the Atelier Association, and the attached theater research institute.
In this performance, we will perform newly written works by various Japanese authors, while also featuring masterpieces from overseas such as Shakespeare and Chekhov, as well as works by Tennessee Williams and Thornton Wilder.
In addition, the "Atelier Meeting" held at the Shinanomachi Atelier, the theater company's base, combines traditional study sessions with performances of ambitious and experimental works.
Established in 1961, the affiliated theater research institute serves as a training institution for the next generation of actors and staff, with over 3,000 graduates to date and continues to produce talented individuals who are active in a variety of fields.
