Background

Welcome to my series of odd and miscellaneous challenges.

Yes, it's that time again, or rather the right day, for us to release another special themed challenge. This one even has a fancy name and some "creative" numbering. Bonus points if you can pronounce the name on your first attempt.

Some of you may have heard of triskaidekaphobia before, but have you ever heard of the even more specific paraskevidekatriaphobia? Or maybe you know it by one of its other names, friggatriskaidekaphobia or araskavedekatriaphobia?

Triskaidekaphobia is the fear of the number 13 whereas paraskevidekatriaphobia, friggatriskaidekaphobia, and araskavedekatriaphobia all mean the fear of Friday the 13th. If you suffer from it (or perhaps just fear really long words in general (which is supposedly called hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia by the way - YIKES!)), this challenge may not be for you.

But if you don't fear it or want to overcome that fear or just think it's a silly superstition, then please continue reading. This challenge is for you!

Essentially every month that starts on a Sunday has a Friday the 13th in it. Every year is guaranteed at least one Friday the 13th though there can be as many as three in the same year. You would think the longest gap between two Friday the 13ths would be 13 months but no, it's actually 14 months.

Including today, there has been 43 Friday the 13ths since 2000. If you want to see when they occurred, a table listing all of them is located at the end of this description.

If you are interested in learning more about Friday the 13th, please feel free to check out this wiki - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friday_the_13th.

Now, let's celebrate this day with a new Olio challenge...

The Challenge

To qualify for this challenge, you must have found 13 caches hidden on Friday the 13th.

The Requirements

Some more things about the challenge to be aware of:

  • All cache types can be used for this challenge except for adventure lab caches, benchmarks, and any events (regular, CITO, mega, giga, HQ block party, HQ celebration, lost and found/community celebrations, and GPS exhibits). Events have been excluded from this challenge because they are only published for a short period of time before being archived and therefore have a very limited window of opportunity to log them.
  • Only the hidden date (the 13th) and day of the week (Friday) matter for this challenge; the month and year are irrelevant.
  • And which days you find these caches is irrelevant as well.
  • This is not a streak challenge in any way. The finds do not have to be sequential in any way. This challenge can be completed over any number of years.
  • In the past, it was possible to log the same cache multiple times. Those caches can only be used once for this challenge.
  • In the past, it was also possible to log your own caches. These caches are not allowed for this challenge.
  • Past finds count. Any caches that you have found and have been archived or disabled after you have found them can be used for this challenge if it meets the criteria.

The fine print

CO reserves the right to make any changes to this challenge if any issues or ambiguities are discovered. CO will be fair but has the final say on any events, caches, finds, or logs that are questionable. CO reserves the right to delete any logs if problems are found.

Finding This Cache

Do NOT access this cache from Highway 2. Please use the nearby service road instead.

Please be aware the shoulder space along the service road near GZ is very limited. For this cache, we recommend parking at the approach to the north of GZ at N 51° 13.913 W 113° 59.946 and walking from there. PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN CROSSING THE ROAD. The coordinates for the parking location are also listed in the waypoint below.

Please remember to be respectful of the cache location. Be aware of how and where the cache is "attached" so that it can be put back in exactly the same way and in the same place for the next person(s) to enjoy.

Logging This Cache

As with any challenge caches, you are welcome to physically sign the log for this cache and log it as "Write Note" if you haven't met the challenge's requirements yet. Please bring your own pen(cil)/writing instrument to sign the log.

Please use this Project-GC challenge checker below to verify if you have qualified for this challenge.

PGC Checker

You can only log a "Found It" entry online after you've completed the challenge and signed the log. All non-qualifying "Found It" logs will be deleted without notice.

Similar Challenge Caches?

Whether you qualify for this challenge or not, you may also qualify for similar challenges as well.

If you know of any other caches similar to this challenge or if you want to replicate this challenge in your area, please let me know and I will add those caches here so that other cachers can be aware.
