Medicago lipulinai is a leguminous plant closely related to clovers. It has a large number of alternative common names, including nonesuch, hop clover, black hay and hop trefoil, though some of these may also refer to species of true clover. The flowerheads are formed from a cluster of 20+ yellow flowers, while the leaves have three leaflets. It grows well on nitrogen deficient soils, and over time can help improve them through nitrogen fixation. It can be used as a fodder crop, particularly for sheep. It is very easily confused with Trifolium campestre, which has similar flower heads but more rounded, less serrated leaves.
