Shantou S.E.Z. - 汕头特区源

汕头市，简称汕，别称鮀城，是中国广东省下辖的地级市，国务院确立的经济特区、海峡西岸经济区中心城市之一、21 世纪海上丝绸之路重要门户、粤东中心城市和东南沿海重要港口城市，位于广东省东部，市境西邻揭阳市，北接潮州市，东隔台湾海峡与台湾相望，南滨南海、地处莲花山脉东南麓，韩江三角洲平原，韩江、榕江、练江的入海口，东部为广东省最大岛屿南澳岛，方言为潮州话，气候属于亚热带季风气候。

Shantou, alternately romanized as Swatow and sometimes known as Santow, is a prefecture-level city on the eastern coast of Guangdong, China, with a total population of 5,502,031 as of the 2020 census. It is established as an economic special zone by the State Council, and is one of the central cities in the West Bank Economic Zone of the Straits, an important gateway to the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, the central city of eastern Guangdong, and an important coastal port city in the southeast. Located in the eastern part of Guangdong Province, it is adjacent to Jieyang City to the west, Chaozhou City to the north, faces Taiwan across the Taiwan Strait to the east, and borders the South China Sea to the south. It is situated at the southeastern foot of the Lianhua Mountain Range, in the plain of the Hanjiang River Delta, which is the estuary of the Hanjiang, Rongjiang, and Lianjiang rivers. To the east is the largest island in Guangdong Province, Nanao Island. The local dialect is Swatow dialect, and the climate belongs to the subtropical monsoon climate.

Shantou, a city significant in 19th-century Chinese history as one of the treaty ports established for Western trade and contact, was one of the original special economic zones of China established in the 1980s, but did not blossom in the manner that cities such as Shenzhen, Xiamen and Zhuhai did. However, it remains eastern Guangdong's economic centre, and is home to Shantou University, which is under the provincial Project 211 program in Guangdong.
